4 common myths about hypnotherapy

1. It is like a magic wand
This is the most common misconception I come across with clients and potential clients alike: ‘you (the therapist) will make a hocus pocus that will fix me. Not at all. Like anything you want to change in your life, you change it.
I think this myth comes from a big part of stage hypnosis where people seem to be controlled by a hypnotist. In the Hypnotherapy in Gold Coast stage, topics are often chosen in advance with their suggestions, it is true. However, even when the participant responds only to the proposal, not the instructions.
The problem with this myth is that many clients will go to a hypnotherapist who thinks that if a stage hypnotist can make a person explode like a chicken against his will, he can certainly make me lose weight. If that were the case, anyone who practiced hypnosis would be fully booked and rich like Croesus.
No, you are in control. Next, I will discuss my next point.

2. I will lose my temper
In hypnosis, you are always in control. Hypnotherapy in Gold Coast is just that, a cure. We are all trying to make a difference: a change in behavior, thinking, and ending in the way you feel — for the better — and that requires your full involvement.
It’s a weird and confusing business — brain function is weird and mysterious — but despite your wandering mind, your part will be taking therapist suggestions to change your behavior. ‘You will take suggestions to change your behavior’. See?
No hypnotherapist should suggest that you do anything beyond your preferences. Your therapist is a complex SatNav that helps you move from A to B. You will not chew like a chicken and will not do or say anything other than your own moral beliefs. You will also remember everything you need to do to make that change.

3. I will fall sleep
I have other clients who are concerned that they might memorize the session and sometimes (though rarely) it happens.
It is rare simply because while dementia seems to be a form of sleep deprivation, it actually works best in the deep level of your lower mind. You are guided by suggestions usually using dream-like situations that involve your active thinking. Less risk of memorizing while your mind is busy.
Whatever happens, who can say what your mind will take and accept at a deeper level ?

4. I’m addicted to drugs
No one has ever raised this concern for me but I am sure others will think so. The answer is no, you will not be caught. If you take everything I have just said — you are in control, you are involved in making suggestions — that takes a lot of unsustainable work for a long time. Usually, 40 minutes is more than enough for any client on the advice I receive.

Remember and it takes a lot of active engagement from a therapist to guide you on your hypnosis journey and without that guidance, you will soon be back to waking up.
